1901 Group is a leading provider of information technology (IT) services focusing on public sector customers that benefit from leveraging highly secure, cloud resources. Below is our recent interview with Paul Wilkinson, EVP Corporate Strategy and Business Development at 1901 Group:

Q: Can you tell us something more about the company and what you do?

A: We provide 24×7 managed services, cybersecurity, and the migration, management, and optimization of mission-critical systems in the cloud. 1901 Group is one of the few companies that has achieved authorization under the federal government’s Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) that provides a standardized approach to security assessment, authorization, and continuous monitoring for cloud products and services. 1901 Group is proud to serve customers that span federal civilian agencies, federal law enforcement, Department of Defense, state and local government, and private sector organizations.

Q: How exactly do you support IT transformation needs?

A: Customers seek to leverage emerging technologies associated with cloud computing, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to transform IT services to enhance mission delivery. To help customers with their IT Transformation needs, 1901 Group created an Enterprise IT Operations Center where we reduce operation and maintenance costs through managed services to create the funding needed for customers to start their IT transformation journey. And, we provide 24×7 management of mission applications that are in the cloud to ensure they are secure and optimized using orchestration and automation. We refer to this approach as Cloud Journey which we have successfully used for large-scale transformation projects.

Q: You’ve recently been named Company of the Year by Roanoke-Blacksburg Technology Council; could you tell us something more?

A: We are honored by the recognition as it reflects the collective efforts of our employees, community, and partners that are working together to help our customers solve complex mission challenges using innovative information technology solutions and cloud computing. The award is an affirmation that our vision to create high tech jobs in rural areas using our “IT Factory” approach is working and the best is yet to come. Additionally, 1901 Group is working in partnership with Virginia Tech and Radford University to develop the next generation of cloud, security, and operations engineering talent.

Q: What makes you stand out from your competition? How is your business model unique?

A: Many IT programs are mired in the inefficiencies of a classic IT service-delivery model that include on-site personnel managing on-premise data center, network, application and infrastructure environments. This model was effective in the 2000s, however, with the availability of FedRAMP cloud solutions, opportunities exist to address aging infrastructure, security vulnerabilities, and IT service delivery using standardized processes, analytics, and automation to improve performance while reducing operational costs.

This rapidly evolving trend has created an unprecedented demand for business models and service partners that support cloud migration, security, automation, and managed services in a highly efficient and cost-effective manner. In contrast, this trend may also pose a struggle for traditional IT organizations, whose labor-based, business model inherently discourages innovations and investments.

1901 Group brings an innovative model to a growing federal IT modernization challenge–helping our customers move components of their IT infrastructure into the cloud. We are purpose-built for these challenges and uniquely positioned in the market based on our proven ability to deliver:

  • large scale expansion of our secure cloud migration/operations capability and capacity
  • highly secure, low cost, repeatable, and automated set of processes
  • 24×7 centralized operation centers located in specifically targeted rural geographic areas with a rich talent pipeline

Q: You just broke ground on your new Blacksburg VA facility expansion; could you tell us Why Blacksburg?

A: Our vision is to build a world-class IT company located in rural areas where we can engage our communities to create the next wave of IT talent. This has been our strategy from our inception to support customers across the globe through IT Factories that have access to talent, a moderate cost of living and a high quality of life. The southwest region of Virginia provides a supportive culture, access to world-class universities and talent, and a lifestyle that is attractive to many IT professionals.

Q: What can we expect from 1901 Group in the future?

A: The 1901 Group vision is to create high technology jobs in rural America, and we believe our team is proof that our vision and approach not only works but works at scale. 1901 Group has created a blueprint for IT transformation that leverages cloud computing and managed services that are still in the early stage of wide-spread adoption. In the future, we will continue to support mission-critical public and private sector programs and will accelerate the use of automation, analytics, and artificial intelligence to further improve IT service delivery.
