Cell Clinic Founder and CEO, Alex Dechant was recently named by BC Business as a Top 30 Under 30 2019 award recipient for his outstanding business leadership to revolutionize the pre-owned cell phone repair and sales industry.
In 2014, when Dechant entered the pre-owned retail mobile industry in Canada, the consumer options for repairing and purchasing a pre-owned smartphone from a trusted source were limited, expensive, or non-existent.
The industry had a very low consumer trust rating and it was an uphill battle for Alex and his team to shift the negative stereotype of third-party repair shops that were offering limited types of repairs, and operating without concern for quality parts, fast turnaround on repairs, consumer warranty, or without the thought of customer service excellence being at the forefront of operations.
With the growing dependency on cell phones for business and personal imperatives, Dechant saw the opportunity to offer consumers a professional and welcoming environment to receive trusted, cost-effective, and quick smartphone repairs (30-60 minutes), and a lifetime warranty on a fix.
Alex was also the first in the Vancouver area to give consumers the opportunity to purchase affordable pre-owned smartphones with an industry-high one-year warranty… helping consumers to save money while reducing the negative impact eWaste has on our planet.
“Nothing has come easy -– you just have to put in the work”, said Dechant. “Of notable mention we have had to overcome challenges brought on due to copy cat companies that have been lifting our name in full, or in part — adopting our business plan… and even more than one competitor actually copied and pasted the Cell Clinic’s entire website, word for word, onto their site.”
But none of this has dampened the spirits of the Cell Clinic team. Under Dechant’s leadership, the team delivers the absolute highest level of service in pre-owned mobile phone repairs and sales in its Vancouver and Surrey locations, as well as its online store. The team is constantly looking for ways to improve services by offering competitive pricing, customer service excellence and the highest warranty in the industry without sacrificing quality on repairs and pre-owned cell phones.
Unique Entrepreneurial Journey
Alex Dechant is a passionate entrepreneur and environmentalist whom was raised in Stony Plain, AB, and earned a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) Marketing / New Media from the University of Lethbridge, AB.
He started as an entrepreneur by chance the year after he completed his University education while visiting the UK. He had a two-year work Visa in hand but he was unable to find a job, even as a “food-carrier” (pizza delivery) so he opened his first cell phone repair company, Apple Tree, before bringing his ideas back to Canada in order to improve cell phone repair and sales in British Columbia, through the Cell Clinic.
Today the Cell Clinic operates as BC’s premier pre-owned mobile sales & service company — with a dedicated team of professionals that have earned a solid reputation for delivering friendly and trusted service. His Mom joined Dechant as a partner in 2016 – making this company a family-owned and operated business.
The Cell Clinic team is passionate about reducing eWaste by prolonging the life-cycle of mobile devices and recycling cell phones in a responsible manner. “According to statistics provided by the national United Way organization, cell phones contain lead, arsenic, beryllium and other hazardous toxins that leach into the environment through landfills. One cell phone, if thrown away, can pollute 40,000 gallons of ground water, says Dechant!”
Dechant has recently started a new company that will put responsible electronics recycling at the forefront of its mission.
The Cell Clinic adopts its team members as family and every member feels at home when they are at work.
The company workplace is inclusive, and currently the Cell Clinic employs men and women from a diverse group of cultures and communities. The inclusive workplace makes the team stronger, happier, and better able to add value to their customers, their families and the workplace. At this time the company can offer customer service in English, Mandarin, Punjabi, Arabic, Russian, and Turkish.
They have also employed staff members that work from virtual offices in order to open recruitment efforts to find the best candidates for the job. Each member of the team is treated with kindness and respect, and in return they are loyal, trustworthy and hardworking professionals that share in the Cell Clinic’s vision and mission.
Each staff member’s individual needs and career expectations are analysed in order to best help staff stay inspired to reach their potential and grow within the company as it expands.
Their staff events are filled with fun and interactive play to give team members and their families an opportunity to bond in a casual way after the work is done.
