Below is our recent interview with Andrew Baek, CTO at Nesten:

Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to Nesten?

A: Based in Los Angeles, CA, Nesten, Inc. is a privately held company that specializes in IoT-optimized blockchains and communications networks. Its networks use a unique ecosystem to drive community-based network deployments.

Q: You’ve recently launched IoT-optimized wireless networks with scalable multi-tiered blockchains in seven metropolitan areas in the U.S. and overseas; could you tell us something more?

A: The various wireless technologies used in the platform have been in development for more than five years, and they were instrumental to the successful deployment of the 200 initial G1s operating across multiple geographic areas.

The initial deployment includes significant coverage footprints in Dallas and Houston, as well as additional nodes in New York, New Jersey, Washington DC suburbs, California, and Seoul, Korea. Additional G1 nodes are expected to go live throughout the year.

Q: How are you changing the future of IoT for cities and industries?

A: Nesten represents a technology and business paradigm shift: We envision a communications infrastructure supported by the collective efforts of network participants, who are primarily the owners of Nesten gateways and devices. In support of this individually operated ecosystem, the Nesten system uses multi-tiered blockchains to operate its network and run its financial incentive system. The deployment process can be individually managed, not unlike setting up a WiFi router at home. The blockchains integrated in the system will ensure the network’s security as well as the integrity of financial processes. They will also accurately and securely maintain the operational history and the authentication records. Data requests will be handled reliably through the multi-tiered blockchains without human intervention. In short, the essence of the Nesten ecosystem is to use connection and coverage incentives to motivate individual owners to utilize their existing Internet connections to set up the gateways needed for the IoT.

Q: Can you give us insights into your products?

A: Nesten’s wireless node, G1, is a high-performance computing platform consisting of the latest quad-core ARM processor, DDR4 memory, and solid-state storage, and integrates multiple wireless protocols of dual-band 802.11ac, Bluetooth, and LoRa. The Nesten multi-tiered blockchain architecture leverages two consensus algorithms, Proof of Stake (PoS) and Proof of Work (PoW), coupled with Performance Metrics (PMs) for wireless coverage and network reliability. The PoS is advantageous with respect to speed and scalability, and the PoW ensures that the blockchain operation is secure and private.

Q: What are your plans for the future?

A: By the end of 2019, thousands of gateways are expected to be in full operation across North and South America and Asia. With this community-based Nesten network established through the gateways, Nesten will collaborate with cities and local governments to put user application technology into practice, providing secure and transparent data management.
