Below is our recent interview with Neil Barton, CTO at WhereScape:

Q: Can you tell us something more about the company and what you do?

A: At WhereScape, our core mission is to help enterprises gain more value out of their data, faster. We help IT organizations of all sizes leverage automation to design, develop, deploy and operate data infrastructures faster. Over 700 global customers rely on our products to eliminate hand-coding and other repetitive aspects of data infrastructure projects to deliver data warehouses, vaults, lakes and marts in just days or weeks rather than months or years, so we are reducing their time to value. Behind our solutions is a team dedicated to empowering our customers to innovate and succeed in today’s big data world.

Q: Could you explain more deeply how exactly your automation software solution works?

A: From design through operation, data warehouse automation helps organizations reduce the data warehouse development lifecycle by 80 percent, increase developer productivity five-fold, better collaborate with business stakeholders and respond more quickly to change. With WhereScape automation software, data warehousing teams tackle each step of the data warehousing process more efficiently, eliminating the time-consuming, redundant hand-coding traditionally required and leveraging metadata and data warehousing patterns to automatically generate ELT code, tables, jobs – even documentation.

At every data warehousing phase, automation helps teams streamline needed work. During design, WhereScape® 3D helps data architects discover and profile data sources automatically. Automated model and processing generation enable quick iterative cycles. During development, developers can automatically generate consistent, robust and stable code with WhereScape® RED – code that is optimized for their target data platform.

During deployment, teams can leverage automated schema management, and reduce the risk of failure or something going wrong with a governed, secured and audited approach. Lastly, when in operation, teams can manage by exception and increase operational efficiency through integrated scheduling, dependency management, central logging and auditing and performance metrics. Finally, given its use of metadata, WhereScape makes it much easier for teams to quickly identify impacts and implement change within existing data warehouses as business needs dictate.

Q: Why do customers choose WhereScape? What makes you the best?

A: Many organizations are still struggling to extract value from data. With an unmeasurable amount of bytes of data flowing into a business every day, it can be difficult for IT teams to keep pace with the ever-growing intake of data and business requests to utilize it. Whether organizations are tackling the creation and operation of data warehouses, data marts, data vaults, or big data integration projects, WhereScape automation software helps IT provide data and analytics to the business 80 percent faster, with less cost and risk.

Customers choose WhereScape because they see the very real appetite for decision-making data within the hands of their business leaders while at the same time understanding the limitations of their IT resources – time, money, staffing – to deliver it. WhereScape has a proven history of working with hundreds of IT organizations, big and small, around the globe to provide automation enabling data warehousing teams to deliver more with their available resources. In today’s quickly expanding data landscape, automation is vital. It’s the only way to keep pace. From data infrastructure design and development through deployment , documentation and operation, WhereScape automation helps IT teams be more responsive.

Q: Can you talk about how automation can help increase the success of data infrastructure cloud migration projects?

A: It takes a lot of time using traditional methods to design, develop and deploy data infrastructure. And tackling a migration project is no different. But it does offer a new opportunity to work in a better way. By taking the time to re-examine existing tools and processes, and exploring the benefits of automation, before beginning a move to the cloud, data warehousing teams can expand their future capability. Automation enables IT teams to be more efficient and effective, providing the framework for an agile data warehousing environment. After all, as time evolves, so do data and analytics requirements.

By automating the migration of data and data infrastructure to the cloud, using software like WhereScape® Migration Express™ for Snowflake, teams can shave massive time off of project timelines and reduce project risk. Metadata-backed automation allows teams to more easily lift and shift existing data infrastructure to new cloud environments, and through the use of automation wizards, optimized data transfer capabilities and more, developers have to do less of the heavy-lifting traditionally required when moving to a new data platform. Automation frees up staff time to focus on the higher-value, more strategic aspects of cloud data warehousing and cuts labor costs in half.

Q: What are your plans for the future?

A: We’re excited by the opportunity presented by the cloud, by new emerging data sources such as IoT, and by the quickly evolving data landscape complexity that our customers are facing as data volumes grow, sources proliferate and business appetites for data continue to increase. Our focus is to continue to help data warehousing teams around the world use automation to harness the complexity they face and deliver the data their organizations are demanding. We plan to continue evolving our automation software to help further eliminate the manual, repetitive elements within the data warehousing life-cycle, ultimately helping our customers to more easily and fully leverage their organization’s greatest asset – their data.
