Below is our recent interview with Bill Mahoney, CEO of ASM International:

Q: Could you provide our readers with a brief introduction to ASM International?

A: ASM International is the world’s largest and foremost professional technical society for materials scientists, engineers, and technicians. Comprised of 25,000 individual members and 7,000 organizations, of which 90% are industry based organizations, our primary operations gather, peer-review, curate, and disseminate the latest technical information about advanced materials, processes, and their applications.

Q: You’ve recently announced IMAT 2020 Twelve Key Topics; could you tell us something more?

A: IMAT 2020 will unify all of ASM’s committees and six affiliate societies, along with industry partners like NACE International, ANSYS/Granta, Intelligent Manufacturing Systems (IMS), and World Manufacturing Forum (WMF). Unlike our regular annual ASM technical industry focused conferences and exhibitions, IMAT 2020 will explore leading edge materials technologies and the economic impact of those technologies for industry business development. The conference and exhibition will include a wide range of technical sessions, education courses, keynote speakers, and networking opportunities.

Q: What are the benefits of becoming a member?

A: Wherever you are in your materials career, being a member of ASM International offers a number of benefits and resources to help you accomplish your personal and professional goals. ASM maintains the largest civilian trove of materials reference content and technical information. Over 300,000 artifacts, such as databases, charts, evaluations, and ASM Handbooks®, help our members and clients to develop professionally, predict materials behavior, overcome design challenges, and achieve superior product performance. Keep your technical edge by taking advantage of our accredited education courses taught onsite at our ASM World Headquarters in Materials Park, OH or onsite at your facility with our Customized Onsite Training. All courses recognize participants with Continuing Education Units or CEUs.

Q: Can you tell us something more about your state of the art training center?

A: ASM International headquarters facility is perched underneath the iconic Dome in Northeast Ohio. The geodesic dome stands as a symbol of humanity’s mastery of materials: from the minerals and laboratories they come from, to the processes that make them useful in ways that touch our lives every day. By attending an education course at the Dome, students get hands-on training with the latest state-of-the-art equipment in our Microscopy Lab, Heat Treat Lab, Metallographic Lab, and Mechanical Lab, as well as, Additive Manufacturing Labs equipped with Nikon CT scanning and PowderSafe AirClean systems.

Q: What are your plans for the future?

A: If it’s manufactured, it involves materials. And if it involves materials, it involves ASM. We are playing a major role in helping to build the bridge between materials science and data science with our partners and collaborations. ASM today has the skillsets and resources to fulfill the vision and execute its strategy to gain position as “Materials 4.0” under Industry 4.0/Manufacturing 4.0. Our Society’s future is bright!
