Below is our recent interview with Bill Nichols, VP Operations at Goken America:

Q: Bill, can you tell us something more about the company?

A: Goken America is an Engineering and Technology Services company whose focus is helping our clientele build better products. We were founded in 2004 and currently have offices in Dublin, Ohio and Utsunomiya, Japan, with further expansion planned in the near future. Our intentional focus on the personal and professional development of our associates has created a culture where people feel deeply tied to not only our client’s success, but the Goken America family as a whole. This feeling of connectivity enables the associates of Goken America to create a unique focus on where we can & want to be as an organization– not defining where we are now.

Q: Goken America’s tagline is “Creating Something Different.” What does that mean?

A: It ties directly to the feeling of connectivity I was mentioning earlier. “Creating Something Different” is meant to be an aspirational statement for our associates – the members of the Goken America family. It represents an encouragement to our associates to take risks, chase innovation and think independently for the benefit of others. People often look to the word “something” and automatically assume it means a tangible item – it doesn’t! We want to encourage people to look at the bigger, wider world around them and look for ways to improve it. That improvement can come in the form of a process, a document, an event or, yes, a product. We don’t think the mind should be limited in trying to help others.

Q: Can you give us insights into your services?

A: Of course! Our viewpoint is that product development is more than the typical Engineering lifecycle. It is a complex mix of both technical and business services which are inter-twined and often require collaboration. In order to facilitate this collaboration, we offer CAD services, CAE analysis and engineering, PLM architecture and support, Human Resources consulting, Procurement and Administrative support as well as language services (translation, interpretation and localization) and concept validation.

Q: You’ve recently been named to the Inc. magazine “Inc. 5000” list, the most prestigious ranking of the nation’s fastest-growing private companies; could you tell us something more?

A: The INC 5000 list is a 3 year overview of an organizations growth and is a great measuring tool for where you stand against some of the best known brands in the world (think: S’Well water bottles and UGG boots were both on this list)! The fact that we have been able to attain the level of growth required to be a part of this prestigious list is impressive. What is more impressive, in my mind, is that we achieved this goal after being in business for more than 10 years and building on organic growth. We have never taken any seed money – it is part of the pride that comes with being a member of the Goken family…the success we’ve had, we’ve achieved through the dedication, commitment and belief of our people.

Q: How does it feel to be a part of Goken family?

A: I would say that being a part of the Goken family feels very similar to being a part of any family! You always respect and love the people around you, but that doesn’t mean you always get along. When you are trying to build and sustain a company which elevates the aspiration of innovation, in many areas, emotions get involved. People feel very strongly and passionately about Goken’s growth and future – these are the feelings and emotions which have gotten us to where we are today, and will be the fuel for pushing us into the future.

Q: What are your plans moving forward?

A: Sustainable growth through the harnessed innovations of our people. We have spent the past 18 months looking at how we can more effectively capture, implement and commercialize the wide array of ideas our associates generate. We truly believe in the strength of the Goken family, and we want to ensure their creative energies have many outlets for manifesting themselves. With this level of engagement, we believe that a cycle of growth and expansion will be created which benefits our associates, our clients and the communities in which we exist.
